Leighton Elected CAPA Vice President

7-23-2019

The Coalition of Airline Pilots Association (CAPA) Board of Directors recently elected Local 1224 Safety Coordinator Russ Leighton, an ABX pilot, to the position of vice president. Leighton has served on CAPA’s Safety Committee since 2005, where he currently serves and will also continue to operate as the director of safety. He serves on Aviation Rulemaking Committees (ARC) on behalf of CAPA, as well as the FAA’s Commercial Aviation Safety Team (CAST) and Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing (ASIAS) Executive Board. Previously he served on the committee that shaped the industry’s FO qualifications and the Flight/Duty Time ARC which was charged with defining new regulations for limits on the hours a pilot can fly and be on duty, based upon fatigue science, for the first time in half a century. First Officer Leighton also served as committee chair for the FAA’s Pilot Records Database ARC which advised the FAA on proposed rulemaking to create and maintain a comprehensive database of pilot training and qualifications, for use by air carriers when hiring new pilots. As vice president, Leighton will assume additional responsibilities to include meeting with congressional offices to further CAPA initiatives to address issues affecting pilots across the industry. Teamsters Local 1224 is a founding member of CAPA, a trade association which represents over 30,000 professional airline pilots. Other member unions are American Airlines (APA), UPS (IPA) and Republic Airlines (Teamsters Local 357). Visit www.capapilots.org to catch up on current legislative issues being addressed by CAPA.
