1224 union hall

Meet the President: Joe Muckle

Joe Muckle, President of Teamsters Local 1224 and a former DC-9 Captain has been instrumental in Local 1224’s transition from single- to multi-carrier representation.  He also has been credited for his involvement with the membership’s overwhelming passage of the amended bylaws which provide for multi-carrier representation at the uppermost level of the local’s leadership.

A believer in a common good and the united spirit of cooperation, he is committed to uniting crewmembers and air carriers to work in union toward the betterment of the piloting profession.

He was appointed to the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) Airline Division’s Board of Advisors in 2008 and was tasked with growing and improving the Division’s operations.  An indicator of his shared success, the Airline Division has recently become the fastest growing Division within the IBT.

Over the past year Muckle has been influential on Capitol Hill, playing a key role in the Airline Safety and Pilot Training Improvement Act of 2009.  He provided testimony to the U.S. House Transportation and Infrastructure Aviation Subcommittee and worked behind the scenes with key staffers.  His influence can be seen in the language pertaining to flight and duty time rules, as well as academic and training requirements.

Muckle has been integrally involved in Local 1224 union affairs for nearly ten years.  In 2002 he became the fiduciary on ABX Air’s Pilot Investment Plan.  Almost simultaneously, he became an active member of the Strategic Planning Committee in which he initiated grassroots efforts to educate crewmembers, encourage them to work in unison and prepare them to make necessary sacrifices to achieve a common goal.  This effort resulted in the procurement of an industry-leading contract in 2003.  He was then elected to serve on the Local’s Executive Board and has since filled the positions of Trustee, Secretary-Treasurer and President.  During his tenure on the Executive Board he has been directly involved in negotiations at the National Mediation Board, greatly reduced Local 1224’s overhead expenses, maintained a large contingency fund, and improved Local 1224’s record keeping and Department of Labor (DOL) compliance.

Muckle has more than 26 years of flight experience and has flown for Airborne Express since 1995.  A highly decorated Air Force pilot, he has served in Desert Storm, several operational missions and ended his military career in the New Jersey Air National Guard as an instructor pilot in the KC-135E.  He serves on the IBT Airline Division’s Board of Advisors and the Coalition of Airline Pilots’ (CAPA) Board of Directors.  Muckle is a graduate of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and completed his MBA in Finance in 2004.
